Review of Disney’s “Maleficent” in 3-D at Tinseltown Theaters in Louisville, KY

Let me first start off by saying that I choose to take my 10-yr old neighbor instead of my own 4 and 7-yr old kids — GOOD CHOICE! This is NOT your next “Frozen” Disney movie!

“Maleficent” is the untold story of, arguably, Disney’s most iconic villainess. The movie is nothing like the classic “Sleeping Beauty” – being that it is very dark, somewhat sad, and fairly violent. Driven by revenge, and her desire to protect the forest of the moors, in which she’s lived her whole life, Maleficent places a curse on the king’s newborn baby girl, Aurora. As Aurora begins to grow up (under the care of the only humorous characters in the movie – 3 fairies, and the watchful eye of Maleficent), Maleficent begins to realize that the girl she once cursed out of pure rage and revenge, may actually be the one person that can save her from evil.

I think the story line was wonderful, the graphics and 3D action was great, but that this movie is definitely not for small children. My neighbor really liked the movie, and we both walked away saying that we enjoyed it, and were pleasantly surprised. Angelina Jolie’s character was fantastic, but it’s the very dark, violent side of the king that makes this movie a little too much for small children to handle.
I would highly recommend seeing “Maleficent” … with older children, or just simply as a Disney-loving adult movie night!
