We are all about free events in December! Surely, enough money is being spent this month. Here’s a selection of FREE family festivals, experiences and events around Kentuckiana.

Check the Louisville Free Public Library calendar; there are storytimes, special holiday programs, book clubs, and more occurring throughout December, and they are all FREE!

Continuing with its FREE admission Sundays, check out the J.B. Speed Art Museum from 12pm-5pm.

Friday evenings, December 1, 8, 15, and 22: Elf-a-Palooza is happening every Friday evening at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville. Free events include the grand arrival of the elves each evening and a screening of the movie Elf. Bring a new toy for admission (one toy per child); toys will be donated to Toys for Tots.

December 2 from 12pm-3pm: The Nature of Christmas in Goshen is happening at Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve. It is free but donations are encouraged.

December 2 from 2pm-6pm: Old Fashioned Christmas at Riverside Farnsley-Moremen Landing will offer families photos with Santa, horse drawn wagon rides, holiday crafts, tours of the historic home, and more, all absolutely free!

December 2 from 3pm-6pm: Attend Light Up St. Matthews and enjoy festivities with your family outdoors at Brown Park.

December 8 from 6-8:30pm: Hop aboard the Polar Express and enjoy holiday festivities at the party at the Main Library in Louisville. The party is in conjunction with Carmichael’s Kids.

December 9 at 1pm: Holidays in the Library – Meet Santa at New Albany Floyd County Public Library.

December 9 from 4pm-7pm: At the Christmas Festival at Sunny Acres Farm, you can meet Santa and Mrs. Claus, and weather permitting there will be hay rides and visits with the animals.

December 14 from 3:30-5:30pm: At Derby City Pediatric Dentistry, bring a new unwrapped gift to donate and get a photo with Santa, enjoy crafts and holiday treats as well.

December 16 at 12pm: Gingerbread house workshop at New Albany Floyd County Public Library.

Other ideas for free entertainment during this holiday month include: Lights/displays around the city such as Christmas on the Square in Jeffersontown; the entire downtown area of Jeffersontown has light up displays where you can park your car and get out and walk around and look at them together. Brown Park in St. Matthews is always lit up for the holidays as well. Across the river in Southern Indiana, you can head to Clarksville, Jeffersonville, and New Albany to find many more light up displays and other free family events, such as watching the famous candy making at Schimpff’s Confectionery!

Enjoy Toyland Christmas, which is a huge hit for family memory making every year.

Head downtown and make a day or early evening of walking the Louie Link Skywalk that connects many downtown hotels and businesses together. Spend time walking around the Galt House Hotel, looking at all of the decorations together. You don’t have to spend any money to wander around together and take some photos!
