Hidden Hollow Orchard right here in Louisville is also a good place to visit. Check their website for updates – they keep their website up to date. OPENED 8/26!  If you have not been here, GO. When my kiddos were younger (as pictured above), they thought this place was a wonderland adventure. Back in the woods, animals, totally non-commercial, a scavenger hunt for the best apples.

This orchard is really rustic and when you drive in, you kind of feel like you are trespassing. But, you are not! Definitely bring bug spray. Have cash on hand and bringing your own bags is a good idea. We have been there and just picked and paid without anyone even there to receive the payment, it’s really laid back. They have some horses in the back, just walk further down the gravel path. Bring carrots and bananas (for the older horses). It’s just such a gem of a place.

Huber’s Orchard & Winery has a large variety of apples for picking plus tons of fun! They also have the Family Farm Park open from May 1-October 31, and is $6 per person ($5 per person if groups of 6 or more).

Be sure to call them before you go to check on what they have that day for u-pick. It’s always changing! Typically, they have apples available for u-pick in mid-August and then different varieties become available. So, you can visit once and then go again a few weeks later and get different types of apples. They also have all of the apples available in their farm market. Remember, they now charge $3-4 per person to ride the wagon out to the u-pick area.

Gallrein Farms is just east in Shelby County and they have season fruit to pick. Usually, you check their farm schedule and call ahead to see if apples are ready (the website says June to November) They have a cute petting zoo and events also. Folks like their market for plants and veggies as well. An excellent option for apple picking near Louisville, a great day out on the farm for kids.

Eckerts Orchards is just a short drive down I-64 in Versailles. Pick Your Own Apples starts August 15th. They have picking for a variety of fruits and veggies as well as and all sorts of fun events and festivals. Definitely click the link here to check their crop updates, they are really good about telling you what’s available and when.

Mulberry Orchard

Mulberry Orchard Farm Park

Mulberry Orchard in Shelby County is a great place to visit with families! We just love the drive out there, we opt for going through La Grange for the scenic drive. Don’t pack lunch, they have a kitchen and delicious food available. I love the BBQ sandwich and apple slaw. My kids love their ice cream and other peach treats. You can visit their farm store for apples they have harvested, they have many varieties – their website estimates when they are all available. They also have a farm play area (fee), animals and hayrides in the fall.

Here’s another great post from Oldham Family Fun that has even more ideas & details including some farm markets to get local apples!

And what to do with all these apples from apple picking near Louisville? Turn them into an apple crisp, apple butter, apple pie, applesauce, dry the apples, make caramel apples and then decorate them with dried fruit and candy to make them look like jack-o-lanterns.

One of my favorite recipe sites is allrecipes.com and they have a great recipe for slow cooker apple butter that can also be frozen to be used later. Hidden Hollow Orchard website also has several apple recipes. So many options you may want to try out both orchards so you can enjoy the apple goodies.
