Erin was given two tickets to movie screening for purpose of review

My daughter and I attended the pre-screening of the Disney film “Into the Woods” last week. Starring Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp, the movie will be released on Christmas Day and if you’re into going to movies around Christmas or the holidays, you will definitely like this one.  From my daughter: “I liked everything about it. My favorite part was when the giant came and had to be defeated.” We both really enjoyed it, and I don’t want to give away too much of the plot because it is so good! There is a definite twist on your favorite fairy tale characters and their happily-ever-afters. Happiness, surprise, magic, darkness, and danger lurk in the woods!

The movie was actually very surprising to me. I did not know much about the movie and the plot going into it, and was very impressed with the story line and the musical element to the story. The movie is based on the musical written by Stephen Sondheim. It is a musical and rather beautifully crafted and sung by the actors and actresses. It weaves the stories of many familiar fairy tale characters and the Brothers Grimm fairy tales, including Little Red Riding Hood, The Big Bad Wolf, The Baker’s Man and his Wife, Rapunzel, Cinderella, The Stepmother and Step Sisters, Jack and the Beanstalk.

The movie is rated PG and I did not find any overly frightening images for children. I would say upper elementary and above plus tweens/teens and adults would appreciate the film.
