Pendleton Farms in Louisville

This past weekend my kids’ fall break began, so we decided to check out a family-friendly farm we had just learned about in southwest Jefferson County. Pendleton Farms is located off of Dixie Highway in the southern most part of the county. It’s a farmer’s market, garden store, and fruit and vegetable store all rolled into one. It’s on the way to Radcliff and Fort Knox. If you are going to head out that way, there is plenty to do to make a day trip full of fun for the whole family.

Note: This post was originally published in 2017 and some of the information may have changed.

At Pendleton Farms, you can spend your time going on a hayride ($3 per person) out through the 23 acres of the family-owned and operated farm to see all of the animals they raise and take care of on their farmland. The hayride is a nice drive (about 30 minutes or so), and you can take an ice cream cone full of feed ($1 per person) to feed the animals when you stop about halfway through. The bull, cows, baby cows, goats, sheep, rams, donkeys, and more will come right up to the side of the hayride tractor and grab the food out of your hand. My son asked, will they eat the cone too, right as a goat chomped it right out of his hand! Staff on site at Pendleton Farms will be sure to give important safety tips before heading out on the hayride such as keeping still and seated, keeping arms and legs inside the rails, placing your cone of feed on the bottom of your hand to protect your fingers from the animals’ mouths, etc. You don’t get off of the hayride but you do get to interact with the animals for about 10 minutes or so. They offered us more feed to feed the animals from our hands, just be sure to keep your hand flat and use the hand sanitizer that is provided when you return!

Once we returned from our hayride, we wandered through the pumpkins they have on site to purchase (they do not have pumpkin picking at this farm). They also offer flowers, mums, gourds and homemade goodies such as apples, potatoes, fresh vegetables, jellies, jams, picked items, local honey, and more. Prices ranged from $3-$10 for those items. Miniature pumpkins were 3 for $2.00, small pumpkins were $3 each, and larger pumpkins were about $6-$10. I picked out a huge pumpkin just right for our carving night for $6!

The farm is very simple, and the people running it were super-friendly and very pleased to talk with visitors and chat about what their farm has to offer goers. We spent a lovely afternoon together. They also have a small snack shop on site that has a variety of drinks for sale for $1 and $5 meals that included corn dogs, hamburger or cheeseburger, chicken strips, and a pulled pork sandwich. We didn’t eat on site that day, and our short trip to the farm cost us $20.00 which included all of our pumpkins, hayrides, and feed for the animals.

Check the Pendleton Farms Facebook page for their most up to date information about their hours, which are typically 3pm-7pm during the week, and 10am-7pm on the weekends. The owner told me during the month of October they will be open every day; their hours are longer on the weekends though.

To find Pendleton Farms, take the Gene Snyder I-265 South to the Dixie Highway exit. Turn left toward Fort Knox. Stay in the left lane. Look for E. Orell Road about 1/2 mile to a mile from the interstate. Turn left. Follow E. Orell Road until you arrive at the address for the farm, 13201 E. Orell Road, 40272. Their phone number is (502) 303-0458.

If you’re planning to visit Pendleton Farms, consider making it a day trip. You can check out the Fort Knox area. You could also make a trip to this part of the Ohio River, visiting the Farnsley-Moremen Landing and historic home, Jefferson Memorial Forest, the Louisville Loop, and other places in the South Points Scenic Area.
