StageOne Family Theatre Brings The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical to the Stage
The perfect indoor fun for winter: StageOne Family Theatre
When 16-year-old Percy Jackson discovers he is the half-blood son of the Greek god Poseidon, his life is turned upside down. Monsters are suddenly real, myths walk among us, and Percy is thrust into a world far bigger — and far more dangerous — than he ever imagined.
That story comes to life on stage as StageOne Family Theatre presents The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical at The Kentucky Center’s Bomhard Theatre. Adapted from Rick Riordan’s best-selling novel and featuring a high-energy original rock score, the musical delivers a fast-paced adventure filled with humor, heart and larger-than-life storytelling. Time Out New York called the production “worthy of the gods.”
Blending epic Greek mythology with a contemporary coming-of-age story, The Lightning Thief follows Percy and his friends as they race against time to prevent a war among the gods. Along the way, they encounter legendary creatures, face impossible odds and discover strengths they never knew they had. At its core, the show is about friendship, courage and finding where you belong — themes that resonate with audiences of all ages.
One of the most striking elements of StageOne’s production is the way mythology is brought to life on stage. Giant puppets transform iconic creatures from ancient legend into a towering Minotaur, a one-eyed Cyclops and a fearsome Chimera. Some of these puppets are operated by as many as three actors at once. StageOne’s cast brings together professional actors and young performers, many of whom train at StageOne’s Walden Conservatory – one of Louisville’s true cultural treasures. The conservatory provides training in acting, directing, playwriting, stagecraft, dance, movement and more. Students gain confidence, creative problem-solving skills, communication and professionalism – tools that extend far beyond the theatre. While some graduates go on to careers on Broadway or in film and television, others carry these skills into a wide range of fields.
StageOne also supports young artists through its StageOne Academy, which offers year-round classes and camps for children eager to explore creative dramatics or sharpen performance skills. With opportunities ranging from single-day camps to immersive performance experiences, the Academy welcomes any child curious about the stage.
