Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Calvin Coolidge both tried to persuade Congress to make it a national holiday and were turned down. In 1966, President Lyndon B Johnson issued a presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday in June to honor fathers but nothing was made official until 1972 when then sitting President Richard Nixon signed Father’s Day as a permanent national holiday.
