Free events in January! The holidays may be over, but the family fun continues. January boasts some fun opportunities and the best news is these events are all FREE!

Free fun in January

As always, our calendar is ready for you at any time when you are looking for things to do with your family. There are many more free events in January listed on our calendar. 

 

Here are some events for you and your family!

Every Friday of the month – Tiny Art Tales at KMAC from 10:30-11:15am.

Blackacre Conservancy – Open Sunrise to Sunset for hiking, exploring, feeding animals, and more

Louisville Nature Center – Gardens and trails are open daily from dawn until dusk.

Yew Dell Botanical Gardens – Tuesday – Friday, 10:00am-4:00pm

January 1

First Year Hikes – Join them on New Year’s Day for a First Day Hike. On Jan. 1, 2024, Indiana state parks and state forests are hosting guided hikes, runs and one trail ride. Find one that is near you.

New Year’s Day Hike – E.P. ‘Tom’ Sawyer State Park, The hike will start at Sawyer Hayes Community Center at 1PM and end with hot beverages of hot chocolate and apple cider.

New Year’s Day Hike – Blackacre, Join them for fresh air, open skies, and a hike through the preserve as you welcome the year ahead. 11am-1pm, meet at the parking lot kiosk.

Kids Eat Free – Drake’s, Kids eat free at Drake’s on New Year’s Day! Ring in 2026 with your Drake’s family. *Dine-in only, up to two kids 12 & under eat free per adult entree purchase, kids meal excludes filet.

Fossil Bed First Day Hike – Meet at the overlook deck, near the front Interpretive Center doors at 1 pm for a guided fossil bed hike.


January 2

Hooray for Play – Shively Library, Drop in any time between 10 and 11:30 AM for an opportunity to gather with friends, meet other families, socialize, craft, and play in a casual setting. Ages 0-8.


January 3

Breakfast & Books – Fairdale Library, Enjoy a light breakfast while we read food-themed stories. Pajamas welcome! Ages 0-8, 10-11am.


January 4

Once Upon an Orchestra – Families are invited to join LO ensembles for these fun, interactive musical storytelling performances. Cresent Hill Library, 10:30am.


January 6, 13, 20, & 27

Ernie’s Lil Engines – Join them every Tuesday from 9:30AM–12PM at the La Grange Railroad Museum Learning Center for indoor winter fun designed for babies through Pre-K (but all ages are welcome!).


January 10

Family Fun Day – KMAC, 11am-3pm. Families can expect free admission during the event hours, demonstrations from miniature artists, music from UofL Music Therapy, a collage and sculpture project in the education studio, a Zine Swap led by artist Kristen Miller, and a special hot chocolate in the KMAC Café!

Hamilton Sing Along – Do not throw away your shot! Celebrate Alexander Hamilton’s birthday by singing your heart out! Join us for this very special after hours event at the South Central Regional Library. 6-9pm


January 19

MLK Day Family Swim with Goldfish Anderson – 10-11:30am, come join us for open swim and free swim assessments in our 90-degree facility! Families should plan to bring their own towels.


January 23-25

Winter StoryWalk –  Wander the Egg Lawn Signature Trail and read a children’s book page by page as you go. Each stop includes a new part of the story and fun activities.
