Review of Family Camping Trip at Buffalo Trace Park in Harrison County, Indiana

DCPD

My family and I spent the weekend camping at Buffalo Trace Park. They have a ton of things to do there (even if you don’t go camping)! It is off 150 NE in Indiana, somewhat near the turn off to go to Hubers.

They have camping available for tents, cabins, and RVs (we stayed with the classic tent camping). Each site has a picnic table and fire ring, and some of the campsites are very close together (check the map before you book). The bathrooms were clean, had toilet paper and soap, and some had showers.

On the grounds, they have a lake with a beach, swimming area, lifeguards, concessions, and a dock with a diving board. It’s $3 per person to swim. Next to the swim beach is the boat renal. They have these cool, old-school pontoon – paddle boats, canoes, kayaks, and row boats. They are different prices per time, but 3 of us enjoyed the paddle boat for 1/2 hour (in the hot sun, working up a sweat) for $5. They provide life vests. You can bring your own non-motorized boats for free.

Near the lake is the free Petting Zoo. They have a horse, goats, chickens, rabbits, and turtles. There is food out in the open for the animals, but the goat was glad to be fed by my kids who grabbed a handful.

There are several playgrounds and a fitness course at several locations around camp, as well as a baseball court, tennis court, tire swing, baseball field, beach volleyball court, and a very large Frisbee Golf course.

There are cement trails that are great for bikes if you bring them, as well as hiking trails all over…bring bug spray. You can fish if you bring bait and poles with an IN State Fishing License. Most activities are open from 11am to 6pm. Bring cash for the activities, firewood, soda machines, and concessions.

The only complaints I had from the weekend: the brownish lake water left us feeling very dirty, we could hear the traffic noises on 150 from out campsite, there was lots of goose poop on the sidewalks, and of course, mosquitos were prevalent.

To make our weekend even better, we started our first day at Adrienne & Co bakery at 5801 US HWY 150 in Floyds Knobs. It looks like a side business to the Marathon gas station next door, but it’s DELICIOUS! A huge selection of warm, fresh donuts and baked goods that reminded me of the bakeries back near NYC.

We also ended our trip at Polly’s Freeze located just off the Edwardsville / Georgetown exit at 5242 State Road 62. This walk-up ice cream shop has incredible tasting ice cream and other delicious things to eat. It had a spacious lawn with tables to eat at in the shade. I can’t wait to go back again soon! These two eateries are easy to stop at on a day trip, weekend trip, or week long stay at Buffalo Trace Park. It’s a great idea for a staycation or a day trip, and it’s less than an hour away.
