New to Louisville

Are you new to Louisville? Moving to a new city is exciting and daunting! We both did it with small kids and found the best way to make friends and learn about our new home was to go out and explore. Here is our list of 10 places to go see/visit/spend time as when you move to Louisville….there’s many more, but we picked some favorites.

PhotobucketLouisville Zoo- Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Lots of animals to see at the local zoo. A nice place to bring a picnic and see some wild animals…..and two playgrounds. Plus, they keep adding exhibits and experiences.

Libraries– Your local library is a great place for FREE events and to meet others with kids the same age as yours. They host countless events for adults and kids, how-to

workshops and have an awesome summer reading program.

Metro parks– Of course another FREE place to visit and they are scattered all over so there is always one nearby. Check out the website to search by feature such as playground, sprayground, trails, dog park etc.

Bernheim– An inexpensive, fun forest for nature lovers of all ages.They have events for learning and exploring so be sure to check the events calendar.

Kentucky Science Center– A great place to check out on rainy, cold, hot,days or really any day. Between an exploration area for younger children, hands on experiences throughout, and an IMAX, it has somethingPhotobucket for everyone! A great way to spend a Friday or Saturday night since it is only $5 after 5pm on these nights. This is a new to Louisville must.

PhotobucketJoe Huber Farm and Family Restaurant and Huber’s Orchard, Winery and Vineyard–  For produce picking, wine tasting, and good old farm fun. Check out our review of Joe Huber’s (Huber’s winery review here). They often have live music on the weekends at Huber’s Orchard and Winery.

Louisville Slugger Museum– See where Slugger bats are made and take home your very own mini bat.You basically need to visit this early on because every family member or friend that comes to visit you will want you to take them there. You might as well get to know it!

Kentucky Derby Musuem– An interactive history of the greatest two minutes in sports that includes a short film and a tour of the track! Here’s a review. Plus, admission is free for kids under the age of five.You will leave with an appreciation and understanding about Louisville’s obsession with the Kentucky Derby. Falls of the Ohio– You can explore the fossil beds and it never gets old.  On a beautiful day, the views are amazing.  And, at the interpretive center, you will learn so much about the history of this area.Photobucket

Louisville Waterfront Park– Waterfront park offers views of the Ohio River, playgrounds, picnic areas, bike trails and rentals, and monuments (be sure to find Abe Lincoln.) Events year round for family fun plus a great walk across the Big 4 Bridge to get those views of the city you now call home.
