Free events in January! The holidays may be over, but the family fun continues. January boasts some fun opportunities and the best news is these events are all FREE!

Free fun in January

As always, our calendar is ready for you at any time when you are looking for things to do with your family. There are many more free events in January listed on our calendar. 

 

Here are some events for you and your family!

Every Sunday – Speed Museum admission is Free from 12pm-5pm. 

Every Friday of the month – Tiny Art Tales at KMAC from 10:30-11:15am.

Blackacre Conservancy – Open Sunrise to Sunset for hiking, exploring, feeding animals, and more

Louisville Nature Center – Gardens and trails are open daily from dawn until dusk.

Yew Dell Botanical Gardens – Tuesday – Friday, 10:00am-4:00pm

January 1

First Year Hikes – Join them on New Year’s Day for a First Day Hike. On Jan. 1, 2024, Indiana state parks and state forests are hosting guided hikes, runs and one trail ride. Find one that is near you.

New Year’s Day Hike – E.P. ‘Tom’ Sawyer State Park, meet at 11 AM for cider and treats before setting off on an approximately 2-mile trek through the park.


January 2

Bilingual Bingo – Iroquois Park, 6pm, Join them to play loteria. They will be playing bilingually Spanish/English. Remember it is free and open to everyone, family event.

Teen Escape Room – Northeast Regional Library, 1pm, This is the ultimate challenge escaping not one, but three rooms. Pre-registration is required. 


January 3

Thousands of Legos & One Lego Movie – Northeast Regional Library, 1pm, Build amazing structures with thousands of Legos while watching The Lego Ninjago Movie (2017) rated PG, running time 90 minutes.  Snacks are provided. 


January 11

Once Upon an Orchestra – Families are invited to join LO ensembles for these fun, interactive musical storytelling performances. Iroquois Library, 10:30am.


January 17

Star Party with the Louisville Astronomical Society – The Parklands of Floyd Fork, 7-9pm. The meeting starts at 7:00pm in the PNC Achievement Center at Beckley Creek Park. Mars, Jupiter and Saturn will be in the night sky along with an 18 day old waning gibbous Moon.


January 18

Bad Kitty Party Animal – Main Library, 1pm, Come celebrate the 20th anniversary of Bad Kitty and the release of Bad Kitty Party Animal with Carmichael’s Bookstore and the Library! Meet author Nick Bruel, get a Bad Kitty drawing in your book, and join in on the birthday festivities! 


January 19

Discovering Dinosaurs – Falls of the Ohio, 3-4pm, Park volunteer Dale Brown will talk about the Dinosaur Renaissance and commonly asked questions about these fascinating creatures.

 

Family Fun Day – January 19, 11am to 3pm – FREE – Families will be able to enjoy free admission, create their own watercolor piece like the artists in the Aqueous USA exhibition, and participate in a Community Art Project based off of Gee Horton’s artwork in “Chapter 3, Be Home Before the Streetlights”! Guests can also enjoy demos from KMAC’s artist in residence, Licia Priest, and warm up with a kid-friendly hot chocolate from the KMAC Café.


January 20

Free Family Swim Event – Goldfish Swim School St. Matthews. 10am-12pm. 90 degree pool sounds amazing. Bring your own towels. If your child is not potty-trained, they are required to wear a reusable swim diaper. RSVP here


January 26

Community Day – Speed Art Museum, 1-4pm, A free family-friendly public event to celebrate the Lunar New Year! Explore the Asian arts and enjoy the Dragon Dance performance!
